How an HR Consultant can help you put your best foot forward and land your dream job Seeking career advice from a Human Resources Consultant can be highly beneficial for individual at various stages of their careers who are looking for their next opportunity. As someone who has navigated my own career searches, I have not only been grateful for the knowledge I have about the recruitment and selection process, but also with the network of professionals I have had in my corner to lean on.
In the past twenty-five I have worked for ten different organizations, across multiple provinces and at different career stages. Upon reflecting to write this post, I recognized key commonalities in all of the roles I have applied for, regardless of the position, industry or location. In order to be successful, I needed to:
Have an understanding of the type of roles, industries and companies I was interested in applying to, and where to start searching.
Ensure my resume and cover letter were professional looking while showcasing how I was uniquely qualified for the role in a way that will resonate with the recruiter.
Prepare myself for the interview process by researching the company extending beyond a quick scan of the company website. To truly be prepared I made sure I had a clear understanding of the competitive landscape, knowledge of the corporate strategy, reviewed the finacial metrics, and considered how the corporate culture/values resonated with me.
Demonstrate to hiring managers how my qualifcations, education, and past experience matched the key criteria of the role. Doing this well meant anticipating the questions they might ask and having examples to share with the right amount of detail.
Show an interest in the role, team and organization by considering thoughtful questions in advance..
Present as confidence, flexible and able to react smoothly to the unexpected. If you can believe it, I have had interviews that I thought would be 2 hours, last 8 hours, I have been caught in a fire drill and had to relocate the interview to another building, and have had to leave an interview early (this was in the beginning stages of my career) when I realized it was a pyramid scheme.
For me, success has come from dilgent research, advance preparation, and thoughtful visualization of myself in the role. In the later half of my career, as I moved to senior professional, leadership and executive roles, the interview process included the preparation of presentations on a variety of business topics This work was usually at the end of a multi-stage interview process of five or six interviews.
As someone who has been deep in the trences, I can commiserate with job search feeling like a part time (sometime fulltime) job on its own.
